When we moved from the city to the country, we decided to utilize our land by raising animals, vegetables, fruits and herbs. We wanted to grow a large crop hardy enough to sustain the unpredictable Michigan weather, and something that would always be working, even if we weren’t. We also needed a crop that wouldn’t be bothered by our woodland friends, and would do well in the loose, loamy soil found in Northern Michigan. With our love of all things natural, including culinary and medicinal herbs, hardneck garlic was our first thought. Hardneck garlic is far superior to the usual, grocery store varieties and much hardier for Michigan farmers. It can be mild or hot and the robust flavors are long-lasting. We do not use any pesticides, bleaches, etc.
Within the hardneck family is the variety of garlic we grow, called Purple Stripe. Due to the extremely long, cold winters in Northern Michigan, Purple Stripe garlic is a hardy choice. In fact, the very first seeds we ever planted were propagated right here in Michigan. Our Purple Stripe garlic is planted before the first snow flies, once we start getting cooler temps. The window to plant in our ever-unpredictable weather is short, but Michigan has the best seasons to grow delicious garlic.
Our decision to start growing garlic has been a good one. It’s a long labor of love – we still weed and fertilize as needed, and everything is done by hand. We plant by hand. We weed by hand. And we harvest by hand. Growing gourmet garlic is hard work! Being able to start it in the Fall to make our Spring a little easier is a no-brainer. And here in Northern Michigan, we have the great advantage of growing delicious, flavorful garlic year after year!
*It is important to us to first sell our garlic locally, but we also take orders online. If you are local, we can deliver, or there is a small shipping fee. Be sure to follow us on Facebook and as we will continue to update where we are selling our garlic scapes (mid-Summer) and our garlic bulbs (late-Summer into the Fall.)
