-   OUR COOP  -

We have been raising happy, healthy chickens and ducks in Our Coop for nearly five years. We have a mixed variety of hens – all raised from day-old chicks. With the cold winters in Northern Michigan, it was important for us to choose cold-hardy breeds. After plenty of research, we knew we not only wanted cold-hardy chickens, but we wanted all hens, those known to have docile personalities, infrequent brooders and we wanted to gather a variety of eggs each morning! We now have two dozen chickens that include Barred Rocks, Columbian and Golden Laced Wyandottes, Golden Buffs and White Rocks. Most of these breeds are excellent layers and we collect various sizes and shades of beautiful, brown eggs each morning.

To add a bit more variety to the flock, we added a half-dozen ducks about two years ago. All research assured us that chickens and ducks could live alongside each other harmoniously. They have been a great addition to Our Coop. Not only are they fun to watch, they are also prolific layers. It is wonderful to gather farm fresh duck eggs each morning, especially when our chickens have slowed down or stopped laying altogether throughout the long, Michigan winters. Ducks love the cold weather, love the snow, love the rain and just love being ducks!

We continue to raise our flock naturally, using no antibiotics or chemicals. They have remained overall healthy for years by making sure they have fresh, clean water, wholesome food and healthy supplements such as garlic and various herbs. The reward is delicious and nutritious fresh eggs, daily!
